The Friends of Erasmus Darwin House invite you to – Sandfields Pumping Station
September 28 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
We have a message from Sandfields. It reads: –
‘‘We would love to welcome you to Sandfields Pumping Station to discover this little gem in Lichfield.
You will be whisked back in time to a world of heavy industry, smoke and cholera pandemics. You will be introduced to the genius of a man who came up with a system to supply clean water from Lichfield all the way to the Black Country. By doing so it doubled life expectancy of the working family.
In small personal groups an enthusiastic guide will take you all around the building, including areas not generally open to the public.
There will be lots of opportunity to take photographs and ask any questions. It is more intimate in small groups and there will be no time constraints. You can marvel at the beautiful architecture, decorative interior and the sheer size of the machinery that was brought to site, we believe, by horse and cart.’’
The entrance to the building is on the flat, from there it is stairs up and down to the other parts of the building. There are toilets on site but no disabled ones and there are no lifts.
We shall have tea/ coffee and, of course, cake.
If you would like to join us, then we would suggest a donation of £10.
