DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately this lecture has been postponed  and ticket holders should receive a full refund shortly.\nWe hope to able to announce a new date in 2025.\n  \nThe history of the garden in the eighteenth century is more than one of acres of grass\, Palladian houses and glassy stretches of water. This talk jumps the ha-ha\, that icon of the eighteenth-century landscape park\, to consider a century that witnessed other leaps of innovation. It saw a gardening revolution that encompassed new plants\, new nurseries\, new technology\, new money\, and the growth of a new gardening press. This talk will explore beyond the boundary of the sweeping vistas to cultivate a wider view of eighteenth-century gardens and gardening. \n  \nElaine Mitchell is Doctoral Researcher in the Centre for Midlands History and Cultures at the University of Birmingham. Her thesis is entitled ‘Culture and Horticulture: Gardens and Green Spaces in Eighteenth-Century Birmingham’. Her publications include ‘Marigolds\, Not Manufacturing. Plants\, Print and Commerce in Eighteenth-Century Birmingham’ in Pen\, Print and Communication in the Eighteenth Century edited by Caroline Archer-Parré and Malcolm Dick (Liverpool University Press\, 2020) and Gardens and Green Spaces in the West Midlands since 1700 (University of Hertfordshire Press\, 2018) edited with Malcolm Dick. \n  \n
