A mighty master of unmeaning rhyme: Erasmus Darwin and the Romantic Poets by Paul Whickman, Derby University
November 12 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm£6.00
Lord Byron’s dismissal of Erasmus Darwin as ‘That mighty master of unmeaning rhyme’ (English Bards and Scotch Reviewers (1809)), belies Darwin’s status as one of the leading poets of his age. This lecture considers the significance of Darwin’s relationship to the poets of the Romantic period. Not only was Darwin’s poetry read by writers such as Coleridge and Byron, others such as Percy and Mary Shelley were strongly influenced by him.
