Library of Evolution

Introduction

The Botanic Garden
The Botanic Garden
The library at Erasmus Darwin House has recently received a loan of books on evolution from the estate of the late Erasmus Darwin Barlow (1915-2005), Erasmus Darwin's great-great-great grandson. Included are early editions of works by Erasmus and Charles Darwin as well as biographical writings that have been passed down through the family.

It is proposed that these books will form the nucleus of a "Library of Evolution" at Erasmus Darwin House. The focus of the Library will be on evolutionary theory prior to the publication of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species in 1859, and a primary aim is to develop an online counterpart that will provide constructive information for academic researchers and the general public alike.

From the index above, you will now see that we have a searchable bibliography of Erasmus Darwin's works, and a searchable catalogue of the books in Erasmus Darwin House. A 'bibliography of bibliographies' on early evolutionary theory will follow, and from the latter a focused bibliography on early evolutionary theory will be developed.

Finally, scanned versions of works by Erasmus Darwin and other early evolutionists will be made available online.
